As the guy who started this company, I’m most often asked “what do you guys do exactly?” with a close runner-up being “what is a virtual label?”
Let’s start with some basic facts before I outline the mission of Nine North/Turnpike Music Nashville:
- Approximately 27,000 new releases hit the market
- The major labels release about 7,000 new CD’s.
- More than 800 million CD’s are shipped to stores.
- Less than 10% of albums are profitable.

These days everyone goes looking for whatever the new model is because the old model of the recording industry is clearly broken. All you have to do is look up and down the music streets in Nashville, New York or LA and see that the big buildings that major labels are in are ¾ to completely empty. The reason for that is those buildings were built “as were the major labels” for a time when they could get away with selling $18.98 list CD’s to the consumer. You don’t need to read Billboard to know that business is dead as the dodo.
What then? In the absence of an old model, what is the new one?
Nine North/Turnpike Music Nashville were built & founded in the spirit of the new model. We don’t believe there is just one new model that fits everyone anymore. What works for Phish doesn’t work for Dave Matthews Band any more than what fits Zac Brown Band fits Alan Jackson.
The new model isn’t about one-size-fits-all. It’s about hand-tailored suits crafted for you and your needs and JUST for you.
That’s what Nine North/Turnpike Music Nashville does every day for our artist clients.
With the new model, the only limits are money & imagination – and YOU are the captain of your ship.
There’s no hurry up and wait of signing with a major then sitting still for 3 ½ to 4 years while they decide when you’re coming out.
You don’t have the worry of wondering if the same people who signed you with all that passion will still be there by the time it’s your turn at bat – and we’re willing to bet you they WON’T be.
We are a virtual label, and here’s what this terms means to you and the model we would handcraft for you:
The core team of 9 (7 promotion people and 2 social media people) do the heavy lifting of promotion & social media/marketing for new & established Country artists.
The promotion team handles both mainstream chart stations and indicators/activators that report to BDS & Mediabase. We are also constantly on the road maintaining relationships with those stations as well as doing introductory radio tours for our artist clients.
The social media team is here to promote you and your music online to our tens of thousands of Nine North/Turnpike Music Nashville online followers. These online faithful are both radio decision makers and music fans. Plus, we can also assist you with your online social media strategy and presence. We can sit down and show you an effective way to build your following, or we can even help build it for you. The choice is yours.
Here’s what else we can do, all on an a-la-carte, pay as you go basis:
“A&R – The A&R people we work with do everything from assisting you with your choices of song selection, producers, studios, mixers & engineers, if needed.
“Art Department — The art department people we work with are in charge of all the artwork that goes along with producing an album. This includes CD cover art, advertisements and displays at music stores, all subject to your approval of course.
“Business Affairs – This department deals with the business side of things. It takes care of bookkeeping, payroll and general finances, if needed.
“Legal Department – This department is responsible for all the contracts that are made between the company and the artist, as well as contracts between you and other companies, if needed.
“Marketing Department – This department creates the overall marketing plan for every album that the record company will release. It helps coordinate the plans of the promotion, sales and publicity departments, if needed.
“Publicity – This group is responsible for getting the word out about a new or established artist. It arranges for articles to be written in newspapers and magazines. They also deal with radio and television coverage of an artist.
“Sales – This group oversees the retail aspect of the record business. It works with the record store chains and other music stores to get new albums onto retailers’ shelves. The sales department often coordinates these efforts with the promotion and publicity departments.
Nine North/Turnpike Music Nashville also believes that you can still make money from recorded music, as long as costs are contained – and we can help you with that too.
We will always work the music with the same degree of passion & intensity you put into making it, and you will always know where things stand.
All of that adds up to the special relationships we develop with our artist clients; we call it the Nine North/Turnpike Music Nashville Difference.
We know you have your choice of companies, but feel free to reach out to me to find out why we’d be your BEST choice.
